{"id":1436,"date":"2011-12-30T13:21:21","date_gmt":"2011-12-30T21:21:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.seasidemedicalpractice.com\/dev\/\/dev\/blog\/?p=228"},"modified":"2011-12-30T13:21:21","modified_gmt":"2011-12-30T21:21:21","slug":"the-important-role-of-a-physician-assistant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.seasidemedicalpractice.com\/dev\/the-important-role-of-a-physician-assistant\/","title":{"rendered":"The Important Role of a Physician Assistant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since I joined Seaside Medical Practice, I have frequently been asked about my profession as a Physician Assistant, aka PA.\u00a0 I hope to clarify some of our patients\u2019 questions with a short and sweet version defining the important role of a Physician Assistant.<br \/>\nPA\u2019s are formally trained, licensed healthcare providers who can assess patients through history taking, physical exams, order and interpret labs, order and interpret imaging studies, make diagnoses, and prescribe medications.\u00a0 Some work alongside surgeons in the operating room, perform aesthetic procedures, as well as work in a subspecialist role under the supervision of a physician.<br \/>\nThe majority of students who enter PA school, do so after obtaining a college degree, and many have prior experience in the healthcare field.\u00a0 Formal training ranges between 2-3 rigorous years at an accredited Physician Assistant Program consisting of didactic and clinical education.<br \/>\nGenerally, the first year of PA school spans topics such as Adult Medicine, Pathophysiology, Anatomy, and Physical Examination.\u00a0 The second year is more hands on.\u00a0 Students rotate in different specialties of medicine, with emphasis on Primary Care.\u00a0 After completing the program, students elect to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination to become a certified PA.\u00a0\u00a0Recertification is required after 6 years.<br \/>\nSimilar to MD\u2019s, Physician Assistants must continue life-long education.\u00a0 We are required to log 100 hours of Continued Medical Education achieved through pre-approved clinical and professional educational activities.<br \/>\nMy first position as a certified PA was in Pain Management with an Anesthesiologist. \u00a0There I was able to practice a blend of orthopedics, neurology, and psychology.\u00a0 My second position was with an Endocrinologist, or a doctor who specializes in hormones. \u00a0There I specialized in diabetes controlled with insulin and thyroid disorders.\u00a0 Now, under direct supervision of Dr. Yazdani, a nephrologist and internist, I have an independent practice where I manage my own patients, assist the doctor in complex cases, and perform most of the aesthetic procedures in the office.<br \/>\nAs you can see, a Physician Assistant complements the supervising doctor\u2019s practice in a very unique and important way.<br \/>\nI hope this description gives you a better understanding of the Physician Assistant profession.\u00a0 If you have any other questions, you can find more information at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nccpa.net\/\">www.nccpa.net<\/a>, and as always, I\u2019ll be happy to explain it all again in person.<br \/>\n<br clear=\"all\" \/>&#8212;<br \/>\n<strong>Christine Soriano, Certified Physician Assistant<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since I joined Seaside Medical Practice, I have frequently been asked about my profession as a Physician Assistant, aka PA.\u00a0 I hope to clarify some of our patients\u2019 questions with a short and sweet version defining the important role of a Physician Assistant.
